Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce; no relation.

I thought I  would  like  to  read the  book  that Hawkeye  Pierce  is named after. I  thought  this  book  was about Native Americans, Anglo-American  Colonists  and French  Canadian  Colonists. However, this is a Romance about two young women, who  never belonged in the wilds of colonial  America and their retirement age, military  commander  father. "Give me my children ," said Munro, hoarsely ; "trifle no longer with a father's agony, but restore me my babes." Is Fenimore  Cooper a pen name for Jane Austen?

Despite the fruity nature of a novel which I believed would be filled with adventure, I am thankful for the influence of Last of the Mohicans on writers whose work I do enjoy. It is likely that Last of the Mohicans was an influence on the writing of Edgar Rice Burrows, Robert Howard and Lin Carter. I'm almost certain that George R. R. Martin was influenced by Cooper by following the pattern of killing their main characters at the end of the book.

Paperback Friday: Stableford Finale, for now

Here's the last of the Brian Stableford novels in my collection. Oddly, this one is the first book of the Star-Pilot Grainger series for which I posted a few covers last time. I didn't have the image scanned and just threw this one in the hat for this week. Through the internet I have learned that this series is actually titled, the Hooded Swan and is supposed to be some statement about Stableford's attitude toward violence, Mr. Stableford is, in fact, Dr. Stableford and a lecturer in sociology.

In other news, Sally and I will be on vacation next week and I intend to share it with you all through the blog.

Paperback Friday: Brian Stablefore pt. 1

I discovered Brian Stableford in a little used book shop in Morristown, Tn. He produced novels for Daw in the 1970s and the cover illustrations for his books just scream out at me. I've collected over half a dozen of his Sci-fi novels but haven't read any of them. Most of these books from the Deadalus series came from McKay Used Books and still have price tags of $.75.

Paperback Friday: Joanna Russ & Theodore Sturgeon

And Chaos Died
Copyright 1970, Joanna Russ
An Ace Book. All Rights Reserved.
Original cover price: $.75.

To Sidney J Perelman and Valdimir Nabokov.

I have had this book for years, and years and read it long ago. I purchased it for two reasons; the cover art really leaps out at me and, at the time, I was pretty unfamiliar with female Sci-Fi writers. It is one of the few books that I have never returned to the used book stores but I still have only read it one time. I think it's about time for a review.

The Female Man
Copyright 1973 by Joanna Russ
A Bantam Book / February 1973
This book dedicated to Anne, to Mary and to
the other one and three-quarters billions of us.
Original cover price: $1.25.

I'm pretty sure I purchased The Female Man at the Friends of the Knox Co. Library Sale where I also found a copy of the Philip Jose Farmer novel Flesh. Someday I'll share the contents of both of these books with the blog-o-sphere.

Sturgeon in Orbit

First Jove/HBJ edition published: January 1978
To the most patient of all editors, who is out-shown by Perkins only for his lack of a wolf, Don Bensen and his lovely wife Anne.

This is a collection of five short stories originally published in the pulps from 1951 to '55.

Next time I'll be featuring some Brian Stableford book covers.

Paperback Friday: Fletcher Pratt

Theses came from McKay Used Books and cost 65 and 75 cents respectively, they have not been read yet. I am glad I scanned these book covers as the cover for Alien Planet is now damaged due to the overly sticky price stickers from the book store. Now the green chicks torso and right arm are missing from the cover of the book!

Two by Frederik Pohl

I found these a various used book sales and haven't gotten around to reading either one of them. The art work is certainly indicative of the type of genre fiction which I intend to archive with this project.

Paperback Friday: Miller & Norton

Here are the book covers that I currently have scanned for Walter Miller and Andre Norton.

The View from the Stars
Copyright 1964 by Walter M. Miller Jr.
First Ballantine Printing: January 1965
Ballantine Books, Inc. , 101 Fifth Ave. New York, N. Y. 10003
The View from the Stars is a collection of Mr. Millers short stories which first appeared in the pulps form 1952 to 1954. I read this one last year. These tales certainly testify to the talent of a writer who would win the Hugo Award for for his novel Canticle for Leibowitz which I also have but have not read.

A Canticle For Liebowitz

Parts of this book appeared in a different for in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, copyright 1955, 1956, Fantasy House, Inc.

Quag Keep by Andre Norton
Copyright 1979, Andre Norton
A DAW Book by arrangement with Antheneum Publications.
A Margaret K. McElderry Book.
First DAW printing, September 1979.

I have read Quag Keep twice. Once during the '80s, as a school boy, after reading a review of the book in Dragon magazine. Quag Keep is, of course, set in Greyhawk and was the first novel I ever read where the characters are rpg players who become their game characters. I read the book again within recent years, it is a light fun read, not unlike simple joy of a R. E. Howard novel.

The Time Traders by Andre Norton
Publication Date: 1958
Publisher: Ace

Ms. Norton's novel The Time Traders is one of the 501 Must Read Books and I found it through Paperback Swap. (Canticle for Leibowitz is also a 501 Must Read Book.) The Time Traders is available through Google Books, Project Gutenberg and I reviewed it at The Polyhedral Dicebag and compared it to Howard as well.

Next up on Paperback Friday will be Frederik Pohl.

Paperback Friday: G - J

Here are the book covers I have scanned for authors whose last names begin with the letters G to J.

Planet in Peril by Pamela O'Neill & Kim Mohan
Ace Science Fiction

There is very little traditional publication information in this book. There is an ISBN but there is no publication date but contains the imprint. "New Infinities Productions, Inc." This is book 1 of Gary Gygax'z Cyborg Commando and, thus, I'm filing it here under the letter G.

I found this book while on vacation last year and apparently paid $3.00 for it. I had never heard of this title or series before and purchased it because it includes Mr. Gygax's name in the credits, of course I have not read it yet.

Robert Heinlein: The Rolling Stones
A Del Rey Book, Published by Ballantine Books
Copyright; 1952 by Robert Heinlein
First Ballantine Books edition: June 1977
This edition published by arrangement with Charles Schribner's Sons.
Cover art by Darrell K Sweet
dedication: For Lucky and Doc and Barbara

This book was a recommended read at discussion I attended on Classic Sci-fi Novels at ChattaCon a few years ago. I found this copy at McKay Used Books for $3.50 but haven't read it yet.

John Eric Holmes: Mahars of Pellucidar
Copyright 1976 by John Eric Holmes and Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.
An Ace Book by arrangement with Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.
All Rights Reserved.

I think I discovered this book through a blog post and found it on Amazon. I believe I paid about $4.98 for it and haven't read it yet. I've got plenty of reading to do in 2012!

John Jakes: Brak the Barbarian
Copyright 1968 by John Jakes.
First published in book form in the U.S. by Avon Books, 1968.
Reprinted by Tandem Publishing Ltd, 1976. (in the U.K.)
Published by arrangement with the author.

I found this one on Paperback Swap dot Com and read it shortly after I received it. I also wrote a review over at The Polyhedral Dicebag. The book's now posted at Paperback Swap for any who might want it, just search for ChrisnSally at PBS and I'll mail it to ya.

Paperback Friday: Charles Fort

Here's an icon of weird science. I got each of these books for twenty-five cents or less.

The Book of the Damned
Copyright, 1919 by Boni & Liveright
Copyright, 1941 by Holt, Reinhart & Winston, Inc.
An Ace Star Book by arrangement with Mrs. Tiffany Thayer

I bought this one for a dime at the Decatur Book Festival, Decatur, Ga. a few years ago. I purchased another old paperback at the time titled, Seven Masterpieces of Gothic Horror. If this book was actually printed in 1941 it has been well preserved.

Wild Talents; Copyright 1932 by Charles Fort
An Ace Book by arrangement with Mrs. Tiffany Thayer

I got this one at the Friends of the Knox Co. Library book sale earlier this year which means I probably paid 25 cents for it, I remember it was in the sci-fi and fantasy section. I read a bit of it while prepping for this post and the first section deals with spontaneous combustion and simultaneous deaths. Pretty weird stuff and, I think, going so far as to chronicle this info and have it published is even weirder.

I'm pretty sure that my copy of this book was published in the 1960s or 70s but there is no other date on the book except 1932. My archiving of the book cover certainly seems justified since I couldn't find this cover by an Internet search.

Paperback Friday: Alan Dean Foster

Splinter of the Mind's Eye
Copyright 1978, The Star Wars Corporation
First Ballantine Books Hardcover: Feb. 1978
First Paperback Edition: April 1978
Cover Art by Ralph McQuarrie

I read this book when I was just a lad, when the book was first released. When in college I traded my copy of the book at some used book store. Then I found the book again at McKay Used Books for $1.25. I haven't reread the tale yet.

The Day of the Dissonance
Copyright 1984 by Thranx, Inc.
First Printing: September 1984.
A Warner Books Edition

I found this one at the Goodwill Store last year and so far it's just been collecting dust. I'm not a big fan of A. D. Foster as owning only two of his books should indicate. I have read one of his Star Trek Logs and wasn't impressed by the storytelling. I also recall owning his novel Glory Lane but I can't recall ever having read it. I suspect I may have owned that book for the silly cover art alone. I often see Glory Lane on the shelves at McKay Books but have yet to purchase a copy, only time can tell...

For the unholy trinity of Bobs:
Bloch, Heinlein, and traurig --
may I meet them on
the banks of the River,
where we'll board the
fabulous Riverboat.

I found these two at the Friends of the Knox Co. Library Sale last month. I got Flesh because after reading These Lawless Worlds I thought I'd try anything. And, it's by P.J.F. so I feel certain that it will be an enjoyable read.

To Your Scattered Bodies Go
Copyright 1971, Philip Jose Farmer
Berkley Medallion Edition, September 1971

1972 Hugo Award, Best Science Fiction Novel of the Year

I bought this one a couple of years ago at the same book sale and read it right away. I may read these other two after I've finished reading through my Lin Carter library. To Your Scattered Bodies Go is one of the sci-fi books on the 501 Must Read Books list.

Paperback Friday: Jo Clayton & more

What’s the purpose of Paperback Friday? It’s a feature where I share with the readers of Fanatical Recycling the mass market Fantasy and Sci-Fi paperbacks which, literally, spill out of my bookshelves. My interests focus mainly on the more notorious Sci-Fi writers like Jack Vance, Brian Stableford, E. C. Tubb, Poul Anderson and Michael Moorcock. Of course, when shopping the various used book bins across America, I also pick up random mass market Fantasy novels. I feel that the cover art for these novels is worth preserving, as relics of these respective genres, this is the purpose of Paperback Friday.

Jo Clayton: Maeve

Theodore Cogswell: The Third Eye
Copyright 1968; Theodore Cogswell

F.R.I. Year End Report

This first week of November seems as good a time as any for the 2010 Year End Report for Fanatical Recycling Inc.

1. The problem with T-shirt Tuesday is keeping track of the shirts that have already been featured. Hopefully, this problem will be resolved during the remaining days of the 2010 calendar year so that T-shirt Tues. can click along in 2011.

2. Paperback Friday should resume this Friday, NOv. 12th.

3. What I'm reading: I'm actually finishing The High King by Lloyd Alexander. I hardly ever read any series of books in order but I've read the last four books of this series since the beginning of Oct. I suppose I'll finish reading Janet Evanovich's How I Write next. The book is literally about how she writes, as it is mainly passages, as example, from her Stephanie Plum books. I have read none of Evanovich's novels but if syrupy romance is your thing, How I Write may be an effective learning tool for you. This stuffs not really my area of interest, I discovered this book while working at a book warehouse earlier this year.

4. Scott, one of our fellow OSR bloggers has mentioned a personal ban on buying books in 2011. This is a policy which I also need to adopt. Knox, Co. Tn. is blessed with the most amazing used book warehouse, Mckay Used Books. I'm always able to find great deals on old paperbacks there, usually at prices from $2.00 to less than $1.00. This has allowed me to purchase no less than five books each month. I have a bookshelf full of books and need to buy no more in 2011, with a few exceptions. I'll write of the exceptions as they occur.

5. What is Fanatical Recycling Inc? F.R.I. was created as a writing outlet for ideas and opinions which are not related to table top role playing games, related literature, ideas or new rpg material. F.R.I. has become a journal of my personal interests, beer, music, old paperbacks, Margaritas, travel, etc.

I had hoped to use F.R.I. to write about my opinions of modern culture. I can't say that I have political opinions; I can only say that I have a philosophy. I have learned that other people rarely listen to "philosophical" ideas which they do not already share and this has placed my philosophies into the deep recesses of my personal consciousness. Perhaps, throughout 2011, I will be able to record some of these opinions and philosophies through F.R.I.

6. Welcome to Zanazaz our second, visible, F.R.I. follower.

7. Lastly, this is my 95th blog post since I started blogging on Oct. 29, 2009. That's nearly two blog articles each week and it is a lot more writing than I was doing before I started the Polyhedral Dicebag blog.

Paperback Friday: Bradbury -- Brunner

Three to the Highest Power; Ray Bradbury, Chad Oliver & Theodore Sturgeon
Copyright 1968 William F. Nolan. First Avon printing February 1968.
Dedication: For Anthony Boucher, who discovered Oliver and promoted Bradbury and Sturgeon.

I found this one at the Friends of the Knox Co. Library sale a few years ago and read it right away. The book contains one short story by each of these authors and is excellent old school Sci-Fi reading.

The Elfstone of Shannara by Terry Brooks
Copyright 1982 Terry Brooks. First Mass Market Edition: Published by Ballantine Books January, 1984.

I got this book for twenty-five cents in Birmingham, Al, sometime between 2001 – 2005 but haven’t read it yet.

The Sheep Look Up by John Brunner
Copyright; 1972 Brunner Fact and Fiction, Ltd. Fourth printing by Ballantine Books May, 1976.
I got this one at the Friends of the K. C. L. sale too. I imagine I’ll read it soon since it’s one of the 501 must read books.
